Joseph Montisetse
NUM President

Joseph Montisetse was elected as the NUM Shop steward at No. 8 Vaal Reefs in 1991. In 1995, he was elected as the deputy shaft chairperson and in 1995 he was elected as a shaft chairperson. In 1998, Montisitse was elected as a full-time shop steward.


In 2003, he was elected as NUM branch deputy secretary and in 2004  as acting branch Secretary.

In 2005, Montisitse was elected as Matlosana Regional Secretary. He served as the Matlosana regional Secretary since 2005 until he was elected NUM Deputy President at the 15th National Congress at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg. He was elected NUM President at the 16th National Congress at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg in June 2018.

Montisitse also served as the Branch Secretary of the SACP from 1998 until 2008. He is a member of the ANC Ward 21at Vaal Reefs and is currently serving as a political commissar of the branch.

 

Phillip Vilakazi
NUM Deputy President

Phillip Vilakazi was employed by Modikwa Platinum Mine as a Rock Drill Operator in 2003. It was in the same year in 2003 where he joined the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). In 2006, he was appointed as Community Liason Officer (CLO). He became ANC branch chairperson in Hoepakrans village for five years. He also became NUM Modikwa Platinum Branch Secretary for four terms. In 2011, he was elected as the NUM North East Regional Chairperson and automatically became a PEC member of Cosatu in Limpopo. He was elected the Deputy President of the NUM during the 16th NUM National Congress held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg in June 2018. The Deputy President is actively involved in various community projects.

Kolekile David Sipunzi
NUM General Secretary

Kolekile David Sipunzi joined the mining industry in July 1985 working for Harmony and in the same year he was recruited into the National Union of Mineworkers. He became an NUM Shaft Steward in 1986 and in 1987 he was elected the NUM Shaft deputy secretary. In 1991, Sipunzi was elected the NUM Free State Deputy Regional Secretary. In 1993, he was elected the NUM Deputy Branch Secretary and in 1996, Sipunzi was elected as the Branch Secretary.


In 1999, he was elected as the NUM Free State Regional Secretary until he was elected as the NUM General Secretary (GS) at the NUM 15th National Congress at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg in 2015. He was re-elected as the NUM General Secretary (GS) at the NUM 16th National Congress at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg in June 2018.

 

Makgabo William Mabapa
NUM Deputy General Secretary

Makgabo William Mabapa was elected as the NUM branch chairperson at Anglo Platinum Mogalakwena section in 1994 to 1995. In 1995, he was elected the branch secretary.


In 1996 he was elected the full-time shop steward after the adoption of the first NUM Ten Year Plan in 1996 National Congress held at Sinnodale, Pretoria to merge the branch secretary position and the full-time shop steward position until 2000, as a branch secretary/full-time he also served as secretary for COSATU Local in Mokopane.

In 1997 up until 2001, he was a branch secretary of the SACP at Molekane Village, at Mogalakwena Local Municipality.

In March 2002 at the 4th regional conference, he was elected as the Regional Secretary for North East Region until 2005. In 2005 at the 5th the regional conference, he was re-elected as the Regional Secretary until 2008. In 2008 at the 6th regional conference, he was re-elected as the Regional Secretary until 2011. In 2011 at the 7th regional conference, he was re-elected as the Regional Secretary until 2014. In 2014 at the 8th regional conference, he was re-elected as the Regional Secretary until 2015 when he was elected as the Deputy General Secretary at the 15th National Congress held at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg. He was re-elected as the Deputy General Secretary (DGS) at the 16th National Congress held at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg in June 2018.

He is a member of ANC at ward 19 under Aganang Local Municipality at Capricorn District Municipality in Limpopo.

 

Mpho Phakedi
NUM Treasurer General

Comrade Mpho Phakedi started working in the mining industry in 1997. He worked as a general worker and moved to various sections and departments. He worked at Old Lorraine Mine; Winkelhak Mine; Venterspost Mine. He became a shopsteward in 1998, elected in 1999 as the branch secretary and became full time until November 2008. In 2002, comrade Phakedi was elected as the PWV Regional Deputy Secretary of Education. Between 2005 and 2008 he served as both Deputy Chairperson and Chairperson of Goldfields mining house shopsteward council. In November 2008 he became the Regional Secretary of PWV region. He was elected as NUM Treasurer General at the 16th National Congress held at Birchwood hotel from the 20-22 June 2018. Comrade Phakedi says he is looking forward to rebuilding and grow this union of Mine, Energy and Construction workers.

Duncan Luvuno
NUM Health and Safety National Chairperson

Duncan Luvuno was NUM deputy branch Secretary at Kriel Power Station between 2006 and 2009. In between, he also acted as branch secretary. He took over the position of branch secretary in 2010 until 2012. In 2013, he was elected deputy branch chairperson. During the period, he also served as Highveld Regional Youth Structure Chairperson. He assumed the responsibility of being a branch chairperson from 2013 to 2015 and re-elected Highveld Regional Youth Structure Chairperson. In the same period, he was elected a National Youth Structure Chairperson. He was elected as NUM National Chairperson Health & Safety at the 16th National Congress held at Birchwood hotel from the 20-22 June 2018.

Sipho Mungwe
National Secretary for Health and Safety

Sipho Mungwe joined Eskom in November 2004 at Matubatuba CNC.  He joined NUM and was elected as Part Time Shop Steward from 2005 to 2006. He was re- elected as Part Time Shop Steward at Empangeni TSG in May 2010. He was elected as Empangeni CNC/TSG/STORES branch Secretary from 2010-2013. Elected as KZN full time health and safety representative in 2013 to 2018. He rejoined the branch as Empangeni branch chairperson from 2016-2017. He was elected as KZN acting regional chairperson on Health and Safety in October 2017 to June 2018. He was elected as NUM National Health and Safety Secretary at the 16th NUM National Congress at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg in June 2018.


Helen Diatile
National Chairperson for Education

Helen Diatile joined NUM in 1996 and was elected as a shop steward for Eskom in Soweto, Diepkloof on the same year.


She became branch educator in 1997 and was co-opted as regional secretary for education in the PWV region.

In 1998, she was elected as the PWV Regional Secretary for Education. In 1999, she was co-opted as regional chair for education and in 2000, co-opted as the regional treasurer.

In 2006, she was elected as the NUM National Education Chairperson until to date. In 2015, Diatile was re-elected again as the NUM National Education Chairperson at the NUM 15th National Congress held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg. In June 2018, she was re-elected again as the NUM National Education Chairperson at the NUM 16th National Congress held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.
