Thamsanqa Piet Matosa
NUM President

National leadership roles

Piet Matosa is the current President of National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). He was elected at the 15th national congress of the union held at the Birchwood Hotel Boksburg in June 2015.

Before his election as President he - served as the Acting President from 2014 till congress after his predecessor Senzeni Zokwana left for government. He had been Deputy President from May 2009 and re-elected in 2012.

Matosa joined NUM in 1990 as a Shaft-Steward in the Administration Department. He was elected Branch Health and Safety Secretary in 1992 and a full-time Shop Steward at Delmas Coal Mine in 1993.

Matosa was also elected (1994) as NUM Highveld Regional Deputy Chairperson for Education and Training Structure and became the Regional Chairperson of this region in 2002. Subsequently re-elected in 2002, 2005 and 2008.

He is also member of serves in the Central Executive Committee of the Congress of South African Trade Unions.

International Leadership roles

Matosa is currently Regional President of Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI Africa and the Middle East) after being elected and re-elected in 2009 and 2016 respectively.

BWI is the Global Union Federation grouping free and democratic unions with members in the Building, Building Materials, Wood, Forestry and Allied sectors. The BWI group together has 326 trade unions representing around 12 million members in 130 countries with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. 

Matosa currently Co-Chairs IndustriAll Africa, which is a member of the IndustriAll Global Executive Committee. He was elected to the position at the IndustriAll 2nd Global Congress in Brazil in 2016 and Member of the Rio Tinto Global Network Steering Committee.

  • Director and trustee respectively of the following Development Agencies: Mineworkers Development Agency; Eyethumed Medical Aid Scheme; Community Growth Fund; and Mineworkers Development Trust
  • Chairperson of Finance Committee of the Construction Sector Education Training Authority.
  • Board Member of the Construction Sector Education Authority.

Joseph Montisetsi
NUM Deputy President

Joseph Montisetsi was elected as the NUM Shop steward at No. 8 Vaal Reefs in 1991. In 1995, he was elected as the deputy shaft chairperson and in 1995 he was elected as a shaft chairperson. In 1998, Montisitse was elected as a full-time shop steward.

In 2003, he was elected as NUM branch deputy secretary  and in 2004  as acting branch Secretary.

In 2005, Montisitse was elected as Matlosana Regional Secretary. He served as the Matlosana regional Secretary since 2005 until he was elected NUM Deputy President at the 15th National Congress at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.

Montisitse also served as the Branch Secretary of the SACP from 1998 until 2008. He is a member of the ANC Ward 21 at Vaal Reefs and is currently serving as a political commissar of the branch.

Kolekile David Sipunzi
NUM General Secretary

Kolekile David Sipunzi joined the mining industry in July 1985 working for Harmony and in the same year he was recruited into the National Union of Mineworkers. He became an NUM Shaft Steward in 1986 and in 1987 he was elected the NUM Shaft deputy secretary. In 1991, Sipunzi was elected the NUM Free State Deputy Regional Secretary. In 1993, he was elected the NUM Deputy Branch Secretary and in 1996, Sipunzi was elected as the Branch Secretary.

In 1999, he was elected as the NUM Free State Regional Secretary until he was elected as the NUM General Secretary at the NUM 15th National Congress at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg in 2015. 

Makgabo William Mabapa
NUM Deputy General Secretary

Makgabo William Mabapa was elected as the NUM branch chairperson at Anglo Platinum Mogalakwena section in 1994 to 1995. In 1995, he was elected the branch secretary.

In 1996 he was elected the full time shop steward after the adoption of the first NUM Ten Year Plan in 1996 National Congress held at Sinnodale, Pretoria to merge the branch secretary position and the full-time shop steward position until 2000, as a branch secretary/full-time he also served as secretary for COSATU Local in Mokopane.

In 1997 up until 2001 he was a branch secretary of the SACP at Molekane Village, at Mogalakwena Local Municipality.

In March 2002 at the 4th regional conference he was elected as the Regional Secretary for North East Region until 2005. In 2005 at the 5th the regional conference, he was re-elected as the Regional Secretary until 2008. In 2008 at the 6th regional conference, he was re-elected as the Regional Secretary until 2011. In 2011 at the 7th regional conference, he was re-elected as the Regional Secretary until 2014. In 2014 at the 8th regional conference, he was re-elected as the Regional Secretary until 2015 when he was elected as the Deputy General Secretary at the 15th National Congress held at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.

He is a member of ANC at ward 19 under Aganang Local Municipality at Capricorn District Municipality in Limpopo.

David Godukile Macatha
NUM Treasurer General

David Godukile Macatha joined the National Union of Mineworkers in 1992 when Eskom took over Becor. He was elected a depot committee chairperson in 1992 and elected NUM Branch Chairperson in 1995. He became Eskom Full Time Shop Steward in 1999. 

Macatha was elected Matlosana Regional Treasurer in 1999 and he was then elected Matlosana Regional Chairperson in 2002, and re-elected in 2005 and in 2008. In 2009, he was elected National Treasurer General of the NUM and re-elected uncontested to the position in 2012 and re-elected in as to the position of Treasurer General in the 15th congress of the NUM in June 2015.

Peter Bailey
NUM Health and Safety National Chairperson

Peter Bailey joined the National Union of Mineworkers in 1992 and he was elected as Shop Steward and Health and Safety Chairperson of the branch the same year. In 1993, he was elected Health and Safety full-time Shop Steward. 

Bailey was elected Health and Safety Regional Chairperson of Kimberley Region. In 2000, he was elected National Chairperson for Health and Safety and was re-elected in 2003, 2006 and in 2009. He served as the Provincial Chairperson of COSATU in Northern Cape from 2008 till 2010.

In 2012, he was re-elected the National Chairperson for Health and Safety and was re-elected to the position in the 15th national congress held at Birchwood Hotel in June 2015.

Eric Gcilitshana
National Secretary for Health and Safety

In 1985, Erick Gcilitshana was employed by Lonmin and joined the NUM in 1986 and he became an active member of the union. He became a branch health and safety secretary in 1987. In 1994,  Gcilitshana became the Rustenburg regional secretary and in 1995, he was a councillor in Marikana Transitional Local Council until 2000.

He was elected as the NUM National Health and Safety Secretary in 1997 until to date. In 2015, Gcilitshana was re-elected again as the NUM National  Health and Safety  Secretary at the NUM 15th National Congress held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg. He is a member of the Mine Health and Safety Council and a member of the Advisory Committee on Occupational Health and Safety under the Department of Labour. He is also a board member of the Vaal Reefs Disaster Trust Fund and an alternative member of the Rand Mutual Assurance.

Helen Diatile
National Chairperson for Education

Helen Diatile joined NUM in 1996 and was elected as a shop steward for Eskom in Soweto, Diepkloof on the same year.

She became branch educator in 1997 and was co-opted as regional secretary for education in the PWV region.

In 1998, she was elected as the PWV Regional Secretary for Education. In 1999, she was co-opted as regional chair for education and in 2000, co-opted as the regional treasurer.

In 2006, she was elected as the NUM National Education Chairperson until to date. In 2015, Diatile was re-elected again as the NUM National Education Chairperson at the NUM 15th National Congress held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.
