NUM member's car burnt at Sefikile Village in North West Province

posted on
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) strongly condemns the burning of its member's car at Sefikile Village in North West Province.

The NUM is again worried on the escalation of systematic attacks on its members by hooligans who are exploiting the strike situation with acts of crime and barbarism.

Last month on the 27th of May 2014, two houses belonging to our members were petrol bombed in the same area.

NUM Branch Chairperson at Union Mine, Steve Modimokwane said the car was burnt at around 12:15 am this morning.

"He is one of the NUM member's who rejoined the NUM in 2013. He has been receiving threatening calls since he rejoined the NUM. Last night the people who burnt his car warned him that they are coming back to burn his house, but he could not see them because it was too dark," said Modimokwane.

Modimokwane further said that the case was opened this morning at Mogwase Police Station.

The NUM NEC, last month, strongly condemned in the strongest terms the continuous intimidation and killings of mineworkers in the platinum belt and most particularly the systematic killing of its members who have not been part of the strike.

In this regard, The NEC makes a clarion call to all its members to exercise their right to go to work and most importantly it calls on all its members to exercise their right to defend themselves against ANY FORMS of violence and intimidation. The NEC calls on them to defend their families, their lives and property.
