NUM member’s houses petrol bombed at Sefikile village in North West Province

posted on
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) strongly condemns the escalation of systematic attacks on its members by hooligans who are exploiting the strike situation with acts of crime and barbarism.

Two houses belonging to NUM members were petrol bombed at Sefikile village next to Union Mine in North West Province last night by hooligans camouflaged as striking unionists.

"We are extremely worried because our members are being attacked and their houses petrol bombed. The police are not doing anything to protect our members who are going to work. We do not know whose house will be petrol bombed tonight," said Steve Modimokwane, NUM Branch Chairperson at Union Mine

Modimokwane further said that another member of the NUM was attacked yesterday morning and managed to escape with minor injuries.

The NUM NEC, last week, strongly condemned in the strongest terms the
continuous intimidation and killings of mineworkers in the platinum belt and most particularly the systematic killing of its members who have not been part of the strike.

In this regard, The NEC makes a clarion call to all its members to exercise their right to go to work and most importantly it calls on all its members to exercise their right to defend themselves against ANY FORMS of violence and intimidation. The NEC calls on them to defend their families, their lives and property.
