The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) welcomes the announcement of the Eskom integrated annual results yesterday. The NUM acknowledges the fact that executive will create stability to re-energise and grow Eskom.
The NUM calls on the Public Enterprise Minister Lynne Brown to act speedily on the leadership crisis at Eskom. A lot of executives are acting in their positions and it is important that they are appointed permanently so that they should be stability at Eskom especially at senior management level.
"We are unhappy to hear that 10 employees lost their lives in the line of duty in 2014-2015. It is 3 workers from Eskom and 7 from the contractors. The high number of the contractor workers dying at Eskom is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. It is important that Eskom must focus more on its Zero Harm concept," said Paris Mashego, NUM Energy Sector Coordinator.
Mashego further said that the reduction of the employee numbers at Eskom is unfortunate. "Eskom has abandoned its parastatal responsibility of creating jobs and jobs opportunities. The reduced intake of engineers, technicians and artisan learners has a negative impact on economic growth."
