NUM is shocked after 36 miners killed in a series of explosions in Russia

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is deeply shocked and saddened after 36 miners were killed in a series of explosions at Vorkutaugol's Severnaya Colliery, Vorkuta in the Komi region of Russia yesterday.

The Russian government must take immediate steps to ensure safe working conditions to avoid more fatal accidents.

We call upon the mining companies around the to invest more money in protecting the lives of workers than focusing more on profits. Mineworkers cannot be sacrificed for profits. We also call on mineworkers to refuse to work in dangerous conditions.

The NUM expresses its sincere condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
