Press Statement, 20 April 2018

THE 7TH ANNUAL JB MARKS CAREER EXHIBITION 2018 HEADS TO RICHARDS BAY TOMORROW.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the JB Marks Education Trust Fund will hold the 7th Annual Career Expo at Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal. The 2018 edition of the annual JB Marks Career Exhibition is heading to Richards Bay from 23 to 24 April at the Zululand Chamber of Business Foundation (ZCBF). This year will see JB Marks Education Trust Fund, in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Basic Education, reach an estimated target of 7 500 grade 11 and 12 learners over 2 days.

In addition, NUM Education Chairperson Helen Diatile, MEC of Basic EducationMEC Mr. Mthandeni Dlungwane, City of Umhlathuze, Mayor Councillor MG Mhlongo and King Cetshwayo District Municipality Mayor Councillor NNP Mkhulisi will all attend the Career Exhibition. The JB Marks Career Exhibition has habitually always been a collective effort between JB Marks Education Trust Fund, the Department of Basic Education, the community and the schools – hence, its consistent success.

The JB Marks Career Exhibition is a community outreach program that began in 2011 with the aim of reaching learners in South Africa’s most rural areas, to give them an opportunity to access information on various careers available in different industries across South Africa, and the world.

The Trust Fund was founded in 1997 by the NUM and named after the first president of the African Miners Union and this year, the Trust celebrates its 21st-anniversary milestone. Over the past two decades, JB Marks has provided bursaries for members of the NUM and their families; ultimately enabling 1121 bursars to graduate with mainstream qualifications (including 18 medical doctors).

What makes the JB Marks Education Trust Fund particularly important to the general upliftment of the community is its interest in the dependents of the NUM members, of whom many have received educational bursaries.

Jako Mokgosi, Principal Officer of JB Marks Education Trust Fund said “This is one of our biggest annual events, and it is significant in that it is designed to uplift our communities. It makes a real impact in the lives of learners that we reach and our exhibitors enjoy participating in our Career Exhibition – particularly because there is no cost to exhibit, it is free of charge because ultimately, it is about the impact of the information we share with these learners”.

Some of the organisations that are set to participate in this year’s instalment of the JB Marks Career Exhibition are regular participants and they include Monash University, FNB, SAPS Forensics and the Career Centre, MERSITA, Boston City College, Financial Services Board, Ubank, Post Bank, Unisa– to name but a few.
