Press Statement, 03 May 2018

8 mineworkers still trapped underground at Sibanye- Stillwater's Masakhane Mine in Westonaria.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is deeply worried and concerned after thirteen employees were trapped underground today after a seismic incident at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Driefontein operations in Westonaria.

"We are informed that there was a seismic event around 1 pm today at Masakhane Mine in Westonaria. 13 workers went missing and 5 who were working in the same area have been rescued so far. Proto teams have been sent underground to look for the 8 missing workers who are still trapped underground. We hope they will be found still alive, healthy and safe," said Peter Bailey, NUM Health, and Safety Chairperson.

The NUM is angry and concerned at the rate at which health and safety incidents are happening at Sibanye Stillwater.
