NUM CALLS FOR A SPEEDY RESOLUTION ON RICHARDS BAY MINERAL SHUTDOWN

 

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in KwaZulu Natal is flabbergasted by the snail pace in finding a long-lasting resolution to the on-going road blockages in the area of KwaMbonambi that has resulted into Richards Bay Mineral being put under “Care and maintenance” for an indefinite period.

 

"During the past three weeks, we have experienced several road blockages and ambush shootings to our innocent members while on their way to work. These incidents possess a life-threatening to human life of our members while it also put our member’s employment at risk. Our member was shot at while travelling on the bus to work and till now no arrest has been made. We call upon law enforcement agency to do their job. NUM further calls for a speedy resolution to this ongoing problem to save the lives and jobs of our members," Muzikayise Zakwe, NUM KwaZulu-Natal Regional Secretary.

 

"We plead with all stakeholders to play their roles in ensuring that the environment is conducive for our members to go to work safely and the mining processes continue without any problems," Zakwe added.

 

The NUM calls for every concern citizens in KZN to join the peaceful march organised by the union against potential job losses at Richards Bay Mineral that could affect more than 5000 permanent and contractor’s employees in Richards Bay.

 

This march will take place as follows:

Time: 09:00 AM

Place: City of Umhlathuze (Municipality Park to the Department of Labour)

Amongst the memorandum recipients,’ it will be Department of labour, KZN Office of the Premier, Department of Minerals, Richards Bay Minerals and South African Police services.
