Press Statement, 27 November 2019

NUM YOUTH STRUCTURE (NUM-YS) IS ANGERED BY THE BARBARIC KILLING OF PRECIOUS RAMABULANA IN LIMPOPO LAST WEEK

The National Union of Mineworkers Youth Structure (NUM-YS) is angered, shocked and perplexed by the diabolical killing of Precious Ramabulana, aged 21, who was a student at Capricorn TVET College in Limpopo was found dead in her room off-campus last week Sunday and had been stabbed 52 times.

This happened on the eve of 16 days of activism against women and children. The NUM-YS is disgusted by this barbaric act that took away the life of a young woman who was on the path of a better future and yet that dream has been shuttered. We would like to send our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends of Precious during this difficult time.

As NUM-YS, we urge the criminal justice system to handle this case differently. As young people of this country, we cannot advocate for these perpetrators to get bail after committing such a barbaric and horrendous act.

"We say enough is enough for all these brutal killings of women and children. As the structure, we would like to call upon all men to stop the killing and abuse of women but rather to protect them all the time. We call upon the student community to help the authorities with any information that could lead in the arrest of the criminals," said Bonginkosi Mrasi, NUM Youth Structure National Secretary.

We hereby make a clarion call to all youth formations to unite and organize young people to stand up and fight for young women's safety and to raise more awareness about gender-based violence.
