A MINEWORKER DIES AT TWO RIVERS PLATINUM MINE IN LIMPOPO

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is highly disturbed after a fatal incident happened at Two Rivers Platinum when moving machinery at South Main Decline drove over an employee who was a member of NUM yesterday afternoon. Two Rivers Platinum Mine is a joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum.

The NUM is saying enough is enough over the fatal accidents that are happening yearly in the mining industry. We call upon the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) Inspectorate to continue doing its job by investigating the cause of the incident.

"The NUM is highly disturbed by the fact that the company has sent employees underground when there was an incident in the mine and that is an indication from the company side that it does not care about Health and Safety of the workers. We further call on the regulator which is DMR to issue a mine with section 54 of Mine,Health and Safety Act (MHSA), so to allow the employees to mourn especially those who were in the vicinity when the fatal incident happened," Phillip Mankge, NUM North East Regional Secretary.

The NUM would like to send its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and the entire workers at Two Rivers Platinum Mine during this difficult time.

The NUM calls on all mining companies to prioritize health and safety of workers not profits.
