The National Union of Mineworkers NUM has learned with shock that Eskom MEW department had booked employees in a hotel for two months doing nothing and hired an independent contractor to do their work.

On the 6th of December 2018, Public Enterprise Minister, Pravin Gordhan, briefed the nation as both the Minister and the Accounting Officer of the utility on the state of Eskom with little or no assurance that there is hope for immediate turnaround. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), through its branches across the country, has investigated the real causes of load shedding as it is busy ravaging the country’s economy and frustrating the poor working class.Poor planning by management is at the centre of this current electricity cut-offs. The main contributor is the reduction of maintenance budget aimed at cutting costs and the low morale as well as demotivated workers, especially highly skilled operators.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has studied the interim financial results as presented by the Thuma Mina board comprised of successful businessmen and women. We have noted that the board is failing to deliver a stimulating long-lasting plan and a sustainable business model. The current trajectory should be derailed.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) welcomes the adoption of the draft Integrated Resource Plan2018 and recommendations detailed by the Portfolio Committee on Energy. The realization and preservation of the country’s economic prosperity should at all times be the output of collective thinking of all citizens.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) strongly condemn the attack last night of five our members at Sibanye-Stillwater Beatrix mine in Welkom, Free State. One NUM member was fatally shot while four others were seriously injured. Our members were randomly attacked in a bus transporting them to work allegedly by members affiliated to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in Kwazulu-Natal will be marching against the IPPs, Eskom privatisation, closing of power stations and coal mines tomorrow (Saturday 17th November 2018 ) at Dales Park in Pietermaritzburg. The march will start at 10:00.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) PWV Region regard the march tomorrow against the IPPs as the beginning of a protracted war against the attack directed on working class and the poor by the South African government through IPPs and the closure of power stations and coal mines which will cause many workers to join the army of unemployed and throw millions of South African population into a sea of poverty.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) does not support what is currently happening at Eskom and we are vehemently opposed to the Department of Energy signing the 27 IPPs agreements, retrenchments, privatisation of Eskom, closure of power stations and coal mines.
