NUM and AMCU to embark on a protest march tomorrow (Friday) targeted at Sibanye-Stillwater management
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) will on Friday, 25 March 2022 embark on a protest march targeted at Sibanye-Stillwater management. The protest march, which is expected to be attended by thousands of Sibanye-Stillwater employees, being members of the NUM and AMCU, is organised mainly to deal with the arrogance demonstrated by the company’s management with regard to wage increases.Sibanye-Stillwater’ employees within the gold operations have declared a dispute at the CCMA as they are demanding wage increases of R1 000 for surface and underground workers and a 6% increase for artisans, miners and officials. Both the NUM and AMCU had noted the arrogance of the employers in maintaining that they are unshaken in their R700 and 5% pittance offer. The so-called captains of the industry continued to award themselves with huge bonuses while mineworkers are earning poverty wages. More so after healthy dividends have been paid to shareholders, the CEOs of Sibanye and many other mining companies make more in one month than a mineworker will make in their entire career. The NUM and AMCU have complied and made an application in terms of the Gathering Act number 205 of 1993 (as amended) to the necessary local government authorities. A memorandum of demand will be handed to Sibanye-Stillwater management. The details of the protest march are as followed:Date: Friday, 25 March 2022.Venue: Sibanye-Stillwater Libanon Business Park (next to Kloof mine in Westonaria).Time: 10am
