NUM mourns the passing away of NUM youth structure deputy chairperson comrade Lekgotho Phala

The National Union of Mineworkers Youth Structure (NUMYS) is deeply saddened with the passing away of the National Youth Structure Deputy Chairperson comrade Lekgotho Phala. Comrade Phala met his demise in a tragic car accident on the 30th of March 2023 at Modimolle in Limpopo.

This committed, selfless leader of our revolution, passed away on his way to Cosatu's 50th Anniversary of the 1973 Durban Workers Strike that was held in KwaZulu-Natal last week.

Comrade Lekgotho was not only an outstanding organizer but also a luminary cultural  activist who championed for cultural recognition and diversity. His contribution to progressive activism was felt across the Sekhukhune Region and South Africa as whole.

We hereby salute him and thank his family, friends and relatives for having borrowed this cadre of a special type to serve our workers. We have no doubt that he would have grown to be one of the most loyal trade unionists in our country. We implore upon young workers leaders to emulate his selflessness, discipline and clarity of thought in our pursuit to transform the working class and the poor in our country and elsewhere in the world.

His dedication and compassion towards people and his work will be solely missed by all those he touched and will remain embedded in our hearts. He is leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service delivery.

The NUMYS sends its condolences to the families, loved ones and to our fellow NUM comrades. We honour and thank him for his contributions towards the struggle for the emancipation of the proletariats, to which he showed the utmost discipline and until his last moments on this earth.

The NUM leadership will provide guidance on the way forward with regards to all memorial and funeral service arrangements.

May his soul rest in perfect and revolutionary peace.

The National Union of Mineworkers was founded in 1982.

Its birth was facilitated by comrades Cyril Ramaphosa who rose to be its first General Secretary, James Motlatsi who turned to be its first President, and Elijah Barayi who became its Vice President and later the President of Cosatu in 1985 when the federation was formed. porn
