Press Statement, 06 January 2014

NUM congratulates the Matric class of 2013

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) takes this opportunity to congratulate the Matriculants class of 2013 for the best performance ever post 1994 .These are the outcomes of the gallant efforts of the parents , teachers , and learners combined .We note that these developments arise out of an extremely tough period in the history of our education system in South Africa .

NUM General Secretary Frans Baleni urged all learners who have passed matric to further their studies at tertiary institutions, attain their qualifications, and plough back to change their immediate circumstances and the world.

In addition, "Real knowledge develops on the basis of application and the more you can apply your knowledge and pass it on to others it becomes a skill, it becomes real knowledge not the claimed knowledge. When you are ploughing back you must never be selfish about education,” Baleni said.

NUM would also like to congratulate the top performing province for 2013 Free State which has achieved 87, 4%, followed by North West, Gauteng, and so on.

It is the union`s firm believe that education is the key to our country `s development, economic growth and leadership to steer our country into success.

Through knowledge and skills the children of the mine , construction , and energy sectors will break the grip of poverty and become engineers , doctors , scientists , lawyers than replicate the social standing of their families which have not been out of choice but a consequence of apartheid domination and capitalist exploitation .
