NUM mourns the passing away of its former deputy president comrade Crosby Moni
The National Union of Mineworkers is deeply saddened by the passing away of its former deputy president comrade Crosby Moni. Comrade Moni passed away on Sunday after a short illness. He was the deputy president of the NUM for many years. His untimely and unexpected death comes as a shock. It is a sad loss to the alliance as a whole especially the NUM where he started his political career. |
He was humble and loyal to the struggle of the country and for the Mine, construction and energy workers. Comrade Moni was a mineworker himself who worked at Matla Colliery in Mpumalanga together with the former General Secretary of the NUM and the current African National Congress Secretary General (ANC SG) Gwede Mantashe. He had a rich history of how the struggle was waged by the movement against the oppressors (apartheid system). Comrade Moni was always at the forefront of the struggle to liberate black Mineworkers from capitalists. He was part of the formation of the NUM in 1982 and grew up in the ranks of the NUM from a Shopsteward level, branch chairperson, Regional Chairperson and the deputy president of the NUM until he retired from the NUM in 2009. At the same time, he participated in various alliance structures such as being a member of the SACP Central Committee for many years, leading the ANC at various levels and subsequently becoming an ANC MP. The NUM send out its deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family, his friends, fellow comrades and the entire alliance. |
