NUM notes the release of the Amended Mining Charter by the DMR
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) notes the release of the Amended Mining Charter by the Minister of Mineral Resources this afternoon, the union will study the charter and aligned it with various union submissions to the Department of Mineral Resources during the consultation period. Most importantly in the areas of ownership (with specific focus on employee share ownership schemes), Human Resource Development, Employment Equity and Housing and Living Conditions (especially ensuring mining companies contribute financially towards employee accessing home ownership).
The union is also looking forward to receiving a detailed progress report on actions taken by the Department against non compliant Mining right holders on the 2014 Mining Charter targets, as described in 2015 Mining Charter Assessment and inline with the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act 2002. These transformational instruments must never be academic and government has a legislative responsibility to enforce compliance, thus it will be premature to start a new chapter without closing the 2010-2014 targets.
Once we have concluded our analysis on the Amended charter, we will release a detailed statement.
