NUM Press Statement, 25 September 2017

NUM demands an apology from Umhlobo Wenene for reporting lies about the NUM on its news bulletin yesterday.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is extremely angry and disturbed after it received complaints from its members who listened to SABC Radio Umhlobo Wenene news bulletin yesterday between 5 and 6 pm repeatedly reporting that the NUM distances itself from the upcoming Cosatu national strike on Wednesday. They quoted Irvin Jim as the General Secretary of NUM. Irvin Jim is not the General Secretary of NUM. He is the General Secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of Sout Africa (NUMSA).

We are calling on Umhlobo Wenene to apologise to our members for reporting these lies. The news bulletin has caused serious confusion among our members.

The NUM is fully behind the upcoming Cosatu national strike and we are calling on all our members to fully participate in the upcoming strike. The NUM is on the ground mobilising its members to come out in large numbers and participate in the strike.

About Us
The National Union of Mineworkers was founded in 1982.

Its birth was facilitated by comrades Cyril Ramaphosa who rose to be its first General Secretary, James Motlatsi who turned to be its first President, and Elijah Barayi who became its Vice President and later the President of Cosatu in 1985 when the federation was formed. porn
