NUM Press Statement, 05 January 2018
NUM notes and welcomes the reinstatement of Matshela Koko at Eskom
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) notes and welcomes the reinstatement of Matshela Koko at Eskom after the power utility’s disciplinary process has cleared him of any wrongdoing. Earlier, Koko was accused of awarding contracts worth R1-billion to a company linked to his stepdaughter.
Whilst the NUM welcomes reinstatement of Koko back to his position as Generation Divisional Executive, there are serious allegations of corrupt activities levelled against Eskom and we believe that government and Eskom Board should get to the bottom of these allegations and root out corruption completely in this company. It is a grave concern that all these alleged corrupt activities and exchange of money which also involves people outside Eskom happened whilst both Eskom Board and Exco were watching, and it is quite difficult to believe that they were completely unaware about the rot that was creeping into the organization.
NUM believes that the only way of ensuring that corruption is dealt with effectively in Eskom is when a comprehensive Judicial Commission of Inquiry into state capture is set up and investigate all these corrupt activities that happened in government departments and state-owned entities like Eskom. NUM further believes that Eskom needs to review this cumbersome Conflict of interest policy, particularly with regard to the declaration of interest as many of our members at lower levels of the company fell victims of and were ultimately dismissed by Eskom.
NUM is also seriously doubtful about the competency of the current Eskom Board in providing clean governance in Eskom and unfortunately, workers are the ones who are always on the receiving end as it will be seen during this year wage negotiations when Eskom will be pleading poverty whilst it is known where the money is to be recovered.
