NUM KWAZULU-NATAL REGION TO EMBARK ON A PROTEST MARCH IN DURBAN.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in Kwazulu-Natal Region will soon embark on a protest march after Eskom provocative offer of 0% wage increase since the wage negotiations started on Monday in Johannesburg. The protest march will happen on the 9th of June in Durban. Amongst other things the NUM is not happy about is the manner Eskom is negotiating which demonstrate arrogance and a don't care attitude to its employees.
NUM is aware that Eskom has developed a new corporate plan which talks about reducing employees by 30%. They are initiating the plan to provoke NUM members and other employees.
"NUM will submit a memorandum about the state of corruption in the region and the latest approach by Eskom of unilateral changing conditions of services. We once said that the signing of IPPs will lead to massive retrenchments and poverty in South Africa. We remain opposed to the nonsensical deal of the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as it seeks to drive the working class to extreme poverty," said Vusi Manana, NUM Eskom Full-Time Shop Steward in Kwazulu-Natal Region.
"If Eskom fails to change its current approach and continue to suffocate the corporate leadership space we are left with no choice but to fight for what we believe is good and correct. We cannot be held at ransom by Eskom and its board and negotiate for poverty wages," Manana concluded.
