Press Alert, 07 July 2019

NUM WESTERN CAPE REGION TO MARCH TO ESKOM BELLVILLE REGIONAL OFFICE IN CAPE TOWN THIS COMING TUESDAY

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) Western Cape will be marching to Eskom Bellville regional office on the 9th of July 2019 (Tuesday). The memorandum handing over will take place between 12H00 and 13H00 at the Eskom building. The purpose of the march is to hand over a memorandum of concerns. The NUM is very concerned in the way the Western Cape Operating Unit (WCOU) management is running the province. The management under the leadership of the General Manager(GM) Alwie Lester is failing black people in the Operating Unit (OU).

We have raised issues where black people were unfairly treated in more than one occasion. The investigations were conducted but no remedial actions were implemented. We have also seen a situation where NUM leaders in the region are targeted, disciplined and dismissed. In some cases, the management doesn't even follow the correct processes as outlined in the LRA. The NUM demand that the GM must step down as he has reached his sell by date. The NUM is very hurt because of the racial discriminatory conduct of WCOU management.

The National Union of Mineworkers was founded in 1982.

Its birth was facilitated by comrades Cyril Ramaphosa who rose to be its first General Secretary, James Motlatsi who turned to be its first President, and Elijah Barayi who became its Vice President and later the President of Cosatu in 1985 when the federation was formed. porn
