NUM and Cosatu to picket against fatalities at the Chamber of Mines on Thursday

Press Statement, 04 May 2018

3 mineworkers are still trapped underground at Sibanye- Stillwater's Masakhane Mine in Westonaria.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) can confirm that six miners were rescued, four deceased and three are still trapped underground at Sibanye-Stillwater's Masakhane Shaft in Westonaria. NUM is deeply worried and concerned after thirteen employees were trapped underground yesterday after a seismic incident.

Two of the five mine workers who are still trapped underground are fatally injured. The other three mineworkers have not been located. One of the 13 mineworkers who were trapped underground is an NUM and unfortunately he is among the deceased.

The NUM is angry and concerned at the rate at which mining incidents are happening at Sibanye Stillwater.

We send our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased mineworkers during this difficult time. May their soul rest in peace.
