NUM Media Statement, 14 October 2016
66 NUM members who staged a sit-in underground resurfaced today
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) can confirm that 66 Rock Drill Operators who staged a sit-in underground have resurfaced from underground here at Gold One Mine in Springs.
They spent five days underground without eating and only drinking water. The NUM can also confirm that they are still healthy and strong. They made it clear that they are still demanding R250 bonus per blast and they want management not to take disciplinary action against them.
"We did not want to come out until our leadership convince us to that because of health reasons. We were prepared to die underground for our demands," says Peter Witbooi an NUM member who spent five days underground.
