NUM Press Statement, 04 August 2014
NUM will fight the privatisation of Eskom
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will vehemently oppose any attempts to privatise parts of Eskom as reported on Business Day today.
As the NUM, we say that Eskom is not for sale and must remain a state entity. This is an attempt to privatise electricity and make it unaffordable to many South Africans. We will mobilise workers against the sale of Eskom.
The NUM also warns Eskom that it must resist from making threats to institute disciplinary measures against NUM members who participated in the march yesterday. Eskom must spend its energy on responding to our registered concerns contained in the memorandum delivered to it by NUM yesterday.
NUM will defend its members against any threats made by Eskom and we will fight to the bitter end. Enough is enough. Our members cannot be treated like slaves.
