BWI affiliated unions, NUM and BCAWU to host BWI 4th World Congress in 26th November-01 December 2017 at ICC in Durban

The Building and Wood Workers International (BWI) affiliated unions, namely the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Building Construction and Allied Workers Union (BCAWU) will jointly host the 4th World Congress, under the banner of the Building and Wood Worker's International (BWI) from 26 November 2017 to 01 December 2017 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban, KZN attended by 700 delegates representing the four corners of the world.

The congress will be convened under the Theme “Amandla! Power to the People" with a cross-cutting theme ‘Fighting Back and Building Power with Innovative Unionism’. The congress will also elect new leadership that includes the President, the Deputy Presidents, the General Secretary, the Auditors’ Committee, The Regional Vice Presidents and members of the World Board, the World Council, The International Women Committee, The International Youth Committee.

The congress is held every four years. It receives reports on activities; adopt a new strategic plan, makes statutory amendments and resolutions. The build-up to the Congress will consist of several pre-congress meetings and mass workers’ marches to Moses Mabhida stadium.

A tree planting ceremony will be held at Gugu Dlamini Park to commemorate World Aids Day. A Solidarity march will start from Gugu Dlamini Park and end at the Moses Mabhida stadium where another tree will be planted in honour of all construction workers who build the 2010 World Cup Stadiums in South Africa.

Hosting the world trade union congress of the BWI, will be an acknowledgment of the role that the South African workers continue to play in the arena of the global working class struggles. It will also strengthen the position of the South African trade union movement in the international trade union arena.
