Congratulations to Mineworkers Provident Fund 25 years of anniversary

The National Union of Mineworkers congratulates the Mineworkers Provident Fund (MPF) on its 25 years of anniversary.

MPF was initiated and negotiated by the NUM and this resulted in the establishment of Mineworkers Provident Fund in 1989 after the 1987 21 days strike that shook the Chamber of Mines. The NUM demonstrated an unprecedented power in South African trade unionism by holding out for three weeks. The 1987 strike was a watershed event in industrial relations and the formation of the MPF happened after the 1987 strike.

The formation of the MPF came at a huge cost where some workers were dismissed and others died. Black mine workers were denied the rights to be members of any retirement fund while their white counterparts enjoyed this privilege.

Today MPF celebrates a milestone and it is celebrating 25 years of existence. It ranks among the top five Retirement Funds in SA with total assets under administration of R26 billion.
As the NUM, we wish MPF to grow from strength to strength and to bring dignity to the mineworkers of South Africa.
