Eight of the nine mineworkers who were missing underground at Doornkop Mine are found dead.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is extremely saddened that eight of the nine mineworkers that were missing at Doornkop Mine were found dead underground by the rescue teams.

The rescue teams are still searching for one mineworker who is still unaccounted for.

"These are really bad news for us as the NUM, families of the deceased, Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) and the South African public. We pass our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. One death is one death too many," said Erick Gcilitshana, NUM Health and Safety Secretary.

We call upon the DMR to trigger its investigation to the incident and as the NUM we will participate in the investigation to leave no stone unturned.
