EXXARO and Eskom must resolve their differences amicably.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is extremely disappointed that the standoff between Exxaro and Eskom about the possible closer of Exxaro Arnot Coal Mine is no closer to being resolved.

The NUM position on the matter between Exxaro and Eskom is that both are at fault on this matter. The NUM is of the view that Exxaro acted recklessly on this matter because they knew that the contract with Eskom was coming to an end in December 2015. Why did they not submit the tender in August when it was opened by Eskom? Why Exxaro decided to issue section 189 without looking at the viable economic options that would save the 1 800 jobs that are at stake. The NUM is highly disappointed that Exxaro only submitted the tender to Eskom in February this year.

The NUM still reiterate its position that the decision not to renew the contract by Eskom will lead to the shedding of jobs at Exxaro Arnot Coal Mine and a lot of workers are going to be affected by this decision.

"Our members are facing a bleak future and there are possible job losses of 1139 permanent employees excluding contractors with 546 employees at Exxaro Arnot Coal Mine. This is a calamity. We view this as a serious concern taking into account that the current rate of unemployment is 25% in the country," said William Mabapa, NUM Deputy General Secretary.

It is high time that Exxaro and Eskom must sit down and address their problems amicably. This war of words or public spat is affecting the vulnerable employees and their families. They must not play with people's lives.
