Former NUM general secretary Kgalema Motlanthe to deliver a keynote address during the launch of the Sam Tambani book

FORMER NUM GENERAL SECRETARY KGALEMA MOTLANTHE TO DELIVER A KEYNOTE ADDRESS DURING THE LAUNCH OF THE SAM TAMBANI BOOK

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Sam Tambani Research Institute (SATRI) will be launching a book about the life and times of Sam Tambani tomorrow night at Emperors Palace. NUM former General Secretary Kgalema Motlanthe will deliver the keynote address during the book launch.

SATRI is a registered Public Benefit, Non-Profit Company that was founded by the NUM and Mineworkers Investment Trust (MIT) in 2012. The Institute main objective is to undertake research and analysis of substantive and primary issues affecting the welfare of workers and workers communities in general, but especially workers in the mining, construction and energy sectors where the NUM organises.  
 
The institute is named after Sam Tambani who was a chairperson of the  NUM National Education Sub-committee. Sam Tambani  embodied many attributes – a Community Leader, a Political Activist and a Trade Unionist. The book traces his life from humble beginnings in Tshiozwi Ha-Sinthumule in Venda, to Soweto where he was killed in 1993 leading a peaceful march against the murder of Chris Hani.
 
In his short life, Sam worked and interacted with many South African post-apartheid leaders. It is very plausible that if he was still alive, he would be occupying a senior leadership position in the country.

Sam’s story is a humble reminder of the many South Africans that fought for the emancipation of black people and the demise of the apartheid system but never came to enjoy the benefits of their efforts. The story of such people needs to be told often and never forgotten.
