NUM Press Statement, 31 August 2015
Matlosana Region: NUM Women Structure media statement
1. TRANSFORMATION
Companies are resisting to accelerate transformation especially of Black Women in the Mining Industry. This ordeal can be testified from the glaring discrimination of Black Women during the recruitment and promotion process.
2. SEXUAL HARASSMENTS
The Women Structure noted with dismay how Companies are ignorant to take appropriate steps in confronting elements of patriarchy in the workplace. We have often witnessed cases of sexual harassment characterised by Job Trading and or selling of Jobs, which mostly expose vulnerable Women to sell their body to obtain Jobs.
3. APPROPRIATE PPE FOR WOMEN
We welcome the progressive move taken by Coal Mining to reach an agreement with Women Structure to provide appropriate PPE for Women to ease them when they have to respond to nature. We, therefore, urge all Mining Companies to emulate Coal Mining sector to alleviate the challenges Women experienced in their respective workplace particularly underground.
4. CARNAGE AFFECTING SWAZILAND YOUTH
We are deeply perturbed to learn about another travesty affecting youth girls of Swaziland while on their way to Unconstitutional Royal Ceremony. We remain resolute to condemn this carnage and eager to fight it with everything within our powers. We are afraid that it may equate to Boko Haram scenario.
This is indeed shocking as we came to a conclusion that, this travesty is a ticking bomb where we may end up losing many people due to this gratuitous accident which could have been prevented.
