National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) to Convene National Political Council at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg

Johannesburg, [25 March 2025] – The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is set to convene its National Political Council (NPC) at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg on the 27th and 28th of March 2025 (tomorrow). This critical gathering will bring together NUM leadership and key stakeholders to deliberate on pressing political and socio-economic issues facing the working class in South Africa.

Under the theme, “Strengthen the working class to roll back neoliberal austerity,” the NPC aims to forge a united front against the detrimental effects of neoliberal policies that continue to exacerbate inequality, poverty, and joblessness which affect workers and their communities.
The council will focus on the following key objectives:
Analyzing the impact of neoliberal austerity measures: Examining the current economic climate and its consequences on employment, wages, and social services within the mining, energy, construction and metal sectors.
Developing strategies to strengthen the working class:
Formulating concrete plans to empower workers and build solidarity in the face of economic challenges.
Advocating for progressive policy alternatives: Crafting policy proposals prioritising workers' rights, job creation, and equitable economic development.
Enhancing political engagement: Strengthening the NUM's political influence and its role in shaping national policy debates.
Building alliances: Fostering collaboration with other labour unions, civil society organizations, and progressive movements to advance the interests of the working class.

The NUM recognizes the urgent need to address the growing disparities and injustices intensified by neoliberal policies. This NPC will serve as a platform for robust discussions, strategic planning, and collective action to safeguard the rights and livelihoods of our members and the broader working class.

The NUM calls upon all its members, allies, and the media to pay close attention to the outcomes of this vital council, which will play a significant role in shaping the future of labour and social justice in South Africa.
