No worker should die on the line of duty

NUM Press Statement, 26 February 2015

No worker should die on the line of duty

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the Western Cape region has learnt with shock and disgust about the death of a worker at CSV construction site in Pinelands, Cape Town about a week ago.  Whilst within a short space of time we also witnessed another loss of life on Tuesday, 24th February 2015 where a civilian riding a motorbike was involved and died at the scene where his bike hit the construction machine.
These two incidents alone clearly show that safety has never been a priority at CSV in particular and yet its business as usual. We understand that the worker who died a week ago was working for a company called TT Renovations sub-contracted by CSV.
As NUM, we want to know the circumstances that led to these tragic deaths of a worker and that of a biker?  And why certain stakeholders were not informed?
As the NUM, one death is one death too many and we call upon all construction companies linked to this, to desist from such a bad practise.
This tendency clearly confirms that many fatalities and accidents in the construction sector are not reported and, as a result, big business get away with murder. We call for an independent investigation that will include all the stakeholders.
Furthermore, we also call for all our structures to see to it that Health and Safety structures are functioning at their workplaces.
