NUM and AMCU members at Sibanye-Stillwater gold operations to march to Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in Sandton tomorrow (Friday) to hand over a memorandum

Thousands of Sibanye-Stillwater workers, affiliated to both the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) will tomorrow (Friday, 22 April 2022) embark on a protest march to hand over a memorandum of demand to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in Sandton.

The protest march is organised mainly to deal with the arrogance demonstrated so far by the Sibanye-Stillwater management with regard to workers' demand for a living wage.

Sibanye-Stillwater’ employees within the gold operations are currently on a protected strike after having declared a dispute at the CCMA. Workers are demanding a wage increase of R1 000 for surface and underground workers and a 6% increase for artisans, miners and officials.

Both the NUM and AMCU had noted the arrogance of the employers in maintaining that they are unshaken in their pittance offer. This is capitalist barbarism and cruelty at its best. Workers are not going to capitulate in fighting for decent salaries. 

The so-called captains of the industry continued to award themselves with huge bonuses while mineworkers are earning poverty wages. More so after healthy dividends have been paid to shareholders, the CEOs of Sibanye and many other mining companies make more in one month than a mineworker will make in their entire career.

The NUM and AMCU have complied and made an application in terms of the Gathering Act number 205 of 1993 (as amended) to the necessary local government authorities.
