NUM and Cosatu will soon march to DMR over the situation at Lily Mine

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) will soon march to the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) over the situation at Lily Mine.

The preparations for the march are at an advanced stage and we will soon announce the date of the march," said Joseph Montisetse, NUM Deputy President.

"We are calling on the DMR as the regulator that it must be in the
forefront to make sure that the three employees who are still trapped
underground since February 5 this year are rescued. Solomon Nyerende, Yvonne Mnisi, and Pretty Nkambule remain trapped underground after a container plunged into a massive hole,"Montisetse added.

There is a safety crisis in the mining industry in South Africa. The
workers have a right to refuse unsafe work. Mining companies should be industry leaders in creating a safety culture. but are doing far too little to prevent fatal accidents and injuries in the mining industry in South Africa.

The NUM will fight tooth and nail to make sure that those trapped
workers are rescued dead or alive so that their families can find
closure.
