NUM and MDA to Host Dialogue on Challenges Facing Ex-Mineworkers

MATLOSANA, NORTH WEST — The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Mineworkers Development Agency (MDA) will co-host a dialogue on the critical issues affecting ex-mineworkers. The event will take place on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Philimon Masinga Stadium in Stilfontein.

This gathering will bring together government officials, industry leaders, and community members to discuss the multifaceted challenges ex-mineworkers face after years of service. The discussion will focus on:

  • Health Concerns: Addressing the prevalence of occupational diseases like silicosis and improving access to healthcare.
  • Financial Security: Tackling issues related to unemployment and inadequate pensions and social security.
  • Social Support: Developing better strategies for social reintegration and community support.

NUM President Phillip Vilakazi will deliver a keynote address, providing a vital perspective on these challenges.

"This is a crucial opportunity to collectively develop sustainable solutions for the men and women who built our mining industry," said Masibulele Naki, National Health and Safety for NUM. "We invite everyone to join us in this important conversation to ensure a dignified future for our ex-mineworkers."

The event is open to all community members and stakeholders.
