NUM Press Statement,   05 July  2017

NUM calls for NKomati and Frank sub-contractor to set up a fund to help the families of the 18 mineworkers who died in a road accident yesterday.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) calls on NKomati and Frank sub-contractor to set up a fund to look after the children and the beneficiaries for the 18 mineworkers who died in a road accident yesterday morning.

The crash, involving a bus and truck, occurred on the Badplaas Road, about 3km outside Machadodorp on Tuesday morning.

"We call upon both the Nkomati and  Franki sub-contractor employers to treat this as a disaster, again they must make sure that these workers are buried with dignity. We call upon the employers to make sure that a fund to look after children and beneficiaries of the deceased is set up," said Erick Gcilitshana, NUM Health, and Safety Secretary.

The department of roads and transport must dig deeper on the investigation and come up with clear recommendations to prevent similar tragic accidents. NUM will continue to participate in all the processes proposed above to ensure that justice is done.

We wish a speedy recovery to the five that are critically injured and admitted to hospital.
