Press Statement, 18 February 2021
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) calls for an immediate investigation into the death of three workers at the ArcelorMittal plant in Vanderbijlpark.
The NUM is highly shocked and very saddened by the death of these three workers. We would like to firstly express our deepest condolences to their families and fellow workers at ArcelorMittal.
The NUM remained concerned and highly worried about the safety of workers at the plant. It appears to us that the health and safety of workers at ArcelorMittal remained a pipeline dream and is not prioritised.
We are therefore calling for an immediate independent investigation on the incident and that should include an investigation into the conduct of the company towards health and safety of employees.
