NUM calls for urgent resolution to water crisis severely impacting Matjhabeng mining operations, workers and communities

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the Free State expresses its grave concern regarding the persistent water shortage in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality. This escalating crisis is severely impacting the mining sector, NUM members, and surrounding communities, placing a dual strain on essential industry operations and the basic human needs of residents.

The mining industry, a cornerstone of the regional economy, is heavily reliant on water for its daily operations, including crucial dust suppression and worker sanitation. NUM is particularly alarmed by the compromised health and safety conditions faced by its members. Miners are forced to work underground for over eight hours with severely limited water, often resorting to carrying just two-liter bottles into old mines with extensive travel distances to their workplaces. This situation poses significant risks to their well-being and productivity.

Simultaneously, local communities within the Matjhabeng Local Municipality are enduring increasing hardships. Access to safe and sufficient water has become a daily challenge, acutely felt in hostels and change houses.

"We urge the Matjhabeng Local Municipality to urgently address and resolve this critical water shortage," said Tetee Mohale, NUM Free State Health and Safety Secretary. "The health and safety of our members, both underground and in their communities, cannot be compromised. We need immediate action to restore consistent water supply to both the mining industry and all affected communities.”
