NUM calls on mining company KUMBA Resources to fight racism at the Kalahari Country Club in Northern Cape

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the Kimberley Region is shocked and perplexed by the manner in which mining company KUMBA Resources tolerate racism to happen at the Kalahari Country Club (KCC) which is owned by the company and comprises of a restaurant, golf course, and other related facilities. There was an incident that happened in February 2019 at the KCC, Northern Cape where a white lady (Supervisor) referred to one of the employees as a Kaffir. There were discussions held with the victim, the white lady and other two black women who witnessed the incident after which the white lady was sent home and returned to work after a week.

The NUM was shocked when the employer later called the witnesses to undergo a Polygraphy test and not the white lady. The two black women (witnesses) have been charged and must attend a disciplinary hearing next week on the 03 April 2019.

The NUM requested a meeting with KCC Management but the management refused saying it was not necessary to have a meeting over the matter.

The NUM will soon embark on a protest march to the Kalahari Country Club and the details thereof will be communicated in due course.
