NUM condemns Eskom's appalling and intransigent behaviour towards its employees

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is shocked and saddened by the passing away of its member at Cofimvaba CNC (Eskom ) in the Eastern Cape Province.

NUM was informed by its members at CNC (Eskom) that the deceased allegedly committed suicide on Friday (20 June 2014) after suspicions of being investigated and potential for dismissal by Eskom.

NUM Eskom members in the Eastern Cape have also informed us of allegations of ill-treatment by Eskom management and executives in the province.

NUM Eastern Cape Regional office has been engaging with Eskom management about the allegations regarding the iron fist approach in labour issues by Eskom management in the province, but they have not been given the attention and respect.

Instead, our members at Eskom in the Eastern Cape continue to be investigated and suspended by the same management. As NUM, we are equal in fighting the abuse of power and arrogance by Eskom management. We are now in the process of engaging management about our intention to picket about the passing of our member, a father, a husband and son to his parents.

We call on Eskom to urgently investigate these allegations as soon as possible.

The NUM would like to pass our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. The struggle is not over, we will unmask the ugly side of Eskom management without fear and favour from anyone.
