NUM Press Alert,  10 November 2016

NUM condemns Floxy Four mine illegal night mining

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is extremely shocked and disturbed that  Floxy Four a small mining company has been mining at night using illegal  immigrants. Floxy Four is based in Amalia township in the North West Province. The company got its mining licence in 2012.

"The mine has not been officially operational since 2012, but there are trucks operating every night which shows that the mine is operational at night. The community has also reported that there are illegal immigrants who are used as cheap labourers at night and the NUM has reported the matter to the Department of Mineral Resources three times. DMR Minister Mosebenzi Zwane is aware of the illegal mining activity taking place at the time. We wonder if this company is paying tax," said Joseph Montisetse, NUM Deputy President.

Montisetse further said that the NUM is very much worried because the laws of this country are not respected.

"We are also disturbed that DMR as the regulator is fully aware of this illegal mining but they are doing nothing," he said.

The former mineworkers who used to work for this company now live in abject poverty. The mine was the only source of employment for the community of Amalia township.
