NUM Condemns High Court Ruling Blocking R54 Billion Eskom-NERSA Settlement (1)

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) calls upon its members who have not returned to work and the broader working class to join the South African Communist Party (SACP) for the 31st annual commemoration of the late struggle stalwart, Comrade Joe Slovo.

The remembrance ceremony for this liberation icon will take place tomorrow:

  • Date: Tuesday, 06 January 2026
  • Venue: Avalon Cemetery, Soweto
  • Time: 10 am

Comrade Joe Slovo, a central figure in dismantling the oppressive apartheid regime and the first General Secretary of the SACP following its unbanning in 1990, remains a beacon of revolutionary discipline and selfless service. The NUM continues to draw vital lessons from his leadership as we navigate the current socio-economic challenges facing South African workers.

The NUM urges its members to attend this commemoration in large numbers to pay tribute to a gallant hero whose life was dedicated to the total liberation of our people. As we honour his unparalleled contributions, we reaffirm our commitment to the struggle for social justice and the dignity of the working class.

The NUM remains dedicated to preserving the legacy of leaders like Comrade Slovo, whose visionary role in the liberation movement helped pave the way for a democratic South Africa.

In the same breath, the NUM also calls upon its members to join in celebrating the ANC’s 114 anniversary this coming Saturday, 10 January 2026, at Moruleng Stadium in North West. The ANC marks 114 years of uninterrupted struggle for freedom, unity and social justice, and President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver the January 8 statement.
