NUM declared a wage dispute with Exxaro

Media Statement, 11 December 2024

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has declared a wage dispute with Exxaro after the two parties met for a third continuation of the internal dispute and could not agree on a multi-year wage agreement that the employer wanted to implement.

The NUM will refer the dispute to the third party which is the CCMA.

The NUM could not agree for a multi-year wage agreement and opted for a one-year agreement because the employer could not accept some of the conditions of employment that the NUM members were demanding, amongst other standby allowance increases. The employer is offering 6,5% for a three-year wage agreement. The NUM rejected Exxaro's proposed multi-year agreement. Exxaro also rejected the NUM's one-year proposed agreement with a demand for a 7% wage increase.

"What angers the NUM members is that when the company was making huge profits, it did not compensate our members. They are now pleading poverty refusing to accede to our member's demands," said Duncan Luvuno, NUM Exxaro Chief Negotiator and NUM National Health and Safety Chairperson.

The NUM would urgently be meeting its members in mass meetings at Grootgeluk Complex in Lephalale and at Leeuwpan in Mpumalanga to give a comprehensive report from Exxaro.
