NUM Press Statement, 20 September 2016
NUM declares a wage dispute with Anglo Platinum Mine
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has declared a wage dispute with Anglo Platinum Mine after the wage negotiations deadlocked. The NUM demands a wage increase of 14.5% while Anglo Platinum Mine’s offer was a mere 6.75%.
The NUM view the offer by Anglo Platinum is an insult to thousands of helpless employees and the union has also observed the attitude by the company vehemently refusing to close the apartheid wage gap.
The NUM deplores Anglo Platinum Mine‘s dirty tactics and the arrogant attitude displayed during the wage negotiations. The NUM remain unshakable on its demands and it will not and never accept Anglo‘s insult wage increase of 6.75%.
Mineworkers continue to risk their lives deep below the surface of the earth to produce platinum, but they still earn poverty wages.
