Media Statement 16 January 2024

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) Eastern Cape Region mourn the death of its two regional leaders who were brutally shot and killed on Sunday morning, 14 January 2024.

NUM Eastern Cape Chairman comrade Mthuthuzeli Nojoko and his Deputy comrade Melumzi Boqwana were brutally shot and killed when they were travelling to Gqeberha from the NUM Staff and Regional Office Bearers (ROBs) meeting which was held in East London the previous day, Saturday 13 January 2024. The NUM local organiser who was travelling with them was left unharmed.

The NUM Eastern Cape Region urges the law enforcement agencies to work around the clock so that perpetrators could be brought to book.

“We are hoping that the police will get to the bottom of this case and that perpetrators are brought to book. As a region, we take this opportunity to express our sincere sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the Nojoko and Boqwana families, relatives, friends and colleagues. May the souls of our comrades and leaders rest in revolutionary peace”, said Mongezi Tabo, NUM Eastern Cape Regional Secretary.
