Press Statement, 22 September 2023
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the Highveld Region will be embarking on a protest march against a barbaric employer called SERITI at the company's head office in Johannesburg today.
Seriti Klipspruit Colliery has served NUM with section 189, and the intention of this employer is to retrench 605 employees.
What is disturbing is that the employer in his business plan, Seriti intends to open an underground operation, of which it gave a contractor called Blue Mining 25 year contract to mine underground.
This barbaric employer is replacing 605 permanent workers with contractors, common sense dictates here that the employer should re-train the employees so that they can retain their employment and work underground.
The NUM in Highveld regards the decision by the Seriti as capitalist barbarism, and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) must be engaged so that we can understand the rationale behind the decision to retrench, how can DMRE allow SERITI to mine with contractors compromising permanent employment in the process.
The details of the march are as follows:
Date: 22 September 2023
Venue:15 Chaplin Road, Illovo, Sandton.
Time: From 10am
The memorandum will be submitted at the Head Office of SERITI at ILLOVO.
Malekutu Bizzah Motubatse, NUM Highveld Regional Chairperson, 082 264 6533.
