NUM is concerned about the continued intimidations of its member at PMG mine in the Northern Cape
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is deeply worried about continued intimidations, harassments, suspensions and assaults of its members by the mine management at the PMG Mine in the Northern Cape.
The company has employed the services of heavily armed security guards to harass, intimidate and assault NUM members at the mine.
One NUM member was assaulted by the mine security last week and another member who is a supervisor at the mining department was suspended on Friday last week by PMG Mine after he questioned the Mine Manager why the NUM member was assaulted by the heavily armed security.
The NUM is also deeply concerned that the member who was assaulted by the security last week was suspended this morning after he opened a case at the local police station. He is being charged for bringing the company into disrepute.
"It has come to the attention of the NUM in the Northern Cape that PMG Mine allegedly owned by the Chinese national has embarked on the militarization of the workplace. Employees have been working under a heavy guard of armed security with live ammunition," said Mike Phiri, NUM Kimberley Region Health, and Safety Chairperson.
The NUM calls upon the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) to further visit the mine and make sure that the Health and Safety of the employees in this company is guaranteed.
We call upon the company to remove the heavily armed security with immediate effect as the area is a mining area and not a military zone.
