NUM Press Statement, 04 March 2016
NUM is concerned that Diro Resources is unlawfully deducting money from its employees salaries.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is shocked and disappointed that Diro Resources in the Northern Cape is treating its employees like slaves after 21 years of democracy. Diro Resources is a Manganese and iron-ore producer based in Kathu Northern Cape.
The company is deducting money from the employees salaries and the money is not paid to the relevant service providers.
The company has been deducting money from the employees salaries under the pretext that the money is paid to their provident fund. The company has not paid over Provident Fund contributions it deducts from its employees either.
For the past two months, medical aid money was also deducted from the employees salaries and it was never paid to the scheme. Currently, all the employees had been suspended from their medical aid.
We learned with the disgrace that Diro Resources has not registered its employees with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). The Minister of Labour must intervene to make sure that the company must contribute to UIF.
There is also a delay in paying employees salaries and this leaves employees with unpaid debit orders and put credit records of employees at risk. The company still owe some employees unpaid salaries of January 2016.
The NUM is going to engage with relevant authorities to do an audit and assist employees in making sure that their rights are protected, to recover their money.
