NUM Press Statement, 07 December 2015

NUM is deeply worried about retrenchments at South 32 in Kuruman

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM is shocked and saddened with the notice they received from South 32 former BHP mine after they served NUM with section 189 notice to retrench 447 mineworkers in Kuruman.

The retrenchment of 447 workers is bad given the fact that the majority of mineworkers support 10 people per family which means that 4 470 families will be negatively affected by this retrenchment.

"We are saying enough is enough we cannot tolerate the arrogance of mine bosses anymore. They make profits, but they cannot share with the workers but when they are not making a profit, workers are the first to be retrenched. We call upon the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) to intervene and halt theses retrenchments. DMR must force these employers to comply with the Social Labour Plans (SLP) commitment," said Lucas Phiri, NUM Kimberley Regional Coordinator.

The NUM will continue to fight these retrenchments. We estimate from our record that to date 24 000 employees were dismissed.

We call upon the captains of the industry to stop their greed and share profits with workers.

The NUM will fight tooth and nail to make sure that its members are not retrenched cheaply. We remain fearless, committed, dedicated and unshaken in fighting for our members.
