NUM Press Statement, 02 February 2016
NUM is deeply worried that two mineworkers are trapped underground at Cook 1 in Randfontein since yesterday.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) can confirm that two workers are trapped underground at Cook 1 since yesterday in Randfontein. Cook 1 is a Sibanye Gold operation.
"Proto teams are trying to rescue them. We call upon Sibanye Gold management and proto teams to double their efforts to rescue those workers alive," said Erick Gcilitshana, NUM Heath and Safety Secretary.
The NUM is also deeply saddened that one worker was killed by a fall of rock this morning at Cooke 3 under Sibanye Gold operation. DMR must leave no stone unturned in these two incidents and as NUM, we will take part in the investigation.
The NUM is of the view that one death in the industry is just one death too many...production should not and must not be at the expense of mineworkers' lives.
May is soul rest in peace.
