NUM Press Statement, 15 October 2015

NUM is gravely concerned about M1 bridge collapse

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) strongly condemns the deaths of two people and the injury to 17 others after a temporary bridge next to Grayston Drive collapsed onto the M1 highway today.
The NUM wishes to pass its heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the families of the deceased and those who were injured when the temporary bridge collapsed.
“The NUM is gravely concerned about the accidents in the Construction industry and we hope the Department of Labour will investigate and find out what caused the collapse of the bridge. As the NUM, we have always emphasized the need of the Department of Labour to reinforce its health and safety inspectorate in the Construction Sector. We therefore demand a transparent investigation to this accident and proper corrective action be taken against anyone responsible for this incident,” said Peter Bailey, NUM National Health and Safety Chairperson.
